چکیده

In the case of ubiquitous computation... people are still trying to find the loose verbal grab-bag just to put the concepts into. So I would argue that this work is basically a literary endeavor. When it comes to remote technical eventualities, you don't want to freeze the language too early. Instead, you need some empirical evidence on the ground, some working prototypes, something commercial, governmental, academic or military. Otherwise you are trying to freeze an emergent technology into the shape of today's verbal descriptions. This prejudices people. It is bad attention economics. It limits their ability to find and understand the intrinsic advantages of the technology.... So language is of consequence. Those of us who make up words about these matters probably ought to do a better job. –Technologist Bruce Sterling, “The Internet of Things”

Exploring the Edge of the Magic Circle: Defining Pervasive Games

Pervasive gaming is a genre of gaming systematically blurring and breaking the traditional boundaries of game. The limits of the magic circle are explored in spatial, temporal and social dimensions. These ways of expanding the game are not new, since many intentional and unintentional examples of similar expansions can be found from earlier games, but the recently emerged fashion of pervasive g...

Pervasive Game-Play: Theoretical Reflections And Classifications

This article explores the theoretical nature of pervasive games (PG). After an epigrammatic introduction to the novel paradigm of pervasive computing and its influence on the making and understanding of games followed by a classification of what I call the four “axes” of pervasive gaming, I discuss in more detail the modifications of (mainly) game rules, game entities, and game mechanics that a...

Gaming on the Edge: Using Seams in Pervasive Games

Outdoor multi-player games are an increasingly popular application area for pervasive computing, supporting experimentation both with new technologies and new user experiences. This paper presents a set of experiments with an outdoor pervasive game that exploits the gaps or seams that exist in complex computer systems. The Bill game is designed so that players move in and out of areas of wirele...

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation in an Interactive Engineering Game

In this paper, we study intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation in players playing an electrical engineering gaming environment. We used UNTANGLED, a highly interactive game to conduct this study. This game is developed to solve complex mapping problem from electrical engineering using human intuitions. Our goal is to find whether there are differences in the ways anonymous players solved electrical...
